Known Issues

This is a list of the known issues reported by the users and their current status. Some issues may have solutions, some may be suggested to the developer. If you have a new issue, please send it to the DTU Learn Support
The developers of Brigtspace (DTU Learn) have a community page that includes a Product Idea Exchange (PIE). To access the PIE and vote for the ideas listed below, please see Creating a PIE-Item.

Subdivision of students on courses with several hundred participants
Description:
On courses like 01005 Matematik 1 which has more than 1000 students each year, the course responsible would like to be able to divide the students, teachers and assisting teachers in smaller parts, according to day of teaching, and where they have group sessions. There is 1 course responsible who would like to make announcements to all students (about 1000) e.g. about exams, several lecturers that would like to make announcements to the students (about 300) that they have, and finally groups of teachers and T.A.s that would like to make announcements and share assignments with the students (about 50) they have.
Status:
A solution where courses can be subdivided into seperate groups has been developed, and can be used by dividing the students into subgroups on DTU Inside. A guide will be online ASAP.
Giving individual feedback to students on a group assignment
Description:
When having group assignments, it is often useful or required to give individual feedback and grades to all group members. This is not possible.
Status:
While it is not possible to give individual feedback in the assessment tool, it is possible to give individual feedback in the Grading tool if a Grade Item has been associated with the assignment. However, it is inconvenient, and a suggestion is already on the PIE.

Writing and editing equations and code snippets
Description:
Inserting equations and code snippets anywhere on DTU Learn where the WYSIWYG editor is used is complicated and takes too many clicks.
Status:
Inserting LaTeX was made easier with the May 2021 update, you can now write LaTeX code directly into the editor.
The layout of the discussion forum
Description:
The discussion forum in DTU Learn lacks many functionalities to be able to compete with similar systems on the market, like Piazza. Some of the missing functionalities include:
  • The use of tags Marking threads as "resolved"
  • See statistics (total posts, unanswered, unresolved, instructor responses, average response time)
  • Clear distinction between roles
  • Tagging individuals like @ulfmol
Status:
There are several suggestions for improvements to the Discussions on the PIE. Furthermore, it is currently being investigated if an integration of Piazza within DTU Learn is feasible.

Translation into Danish
Description:
The system needs to be translated into Danish.
Status:
The system has now been translated into Danish, however, the translation is suboptimal. The official language of DTU Learn has been decided to be English.
Calendar events
Description:
The system is currently not synchronized with the room allocation system, and thus, teaching hours and locations cannot be imported automatically.
Furthermore, bulk edit of calendar events is challenging and requires many clicks.
Status:
As of 1/1 2022, all teaching events created in connection with room allocation is automatically created in DTU Learn as well. Bulk edit functionabilty has been suggested to the PIE.

Export classlist with study line
Description:
The system should allow teachers to export a list of the students including their study line.
Status:
It is not possible to see the study line of students in DTU Learn, as the system does not have this field. As of 1/1 2022 "Deltagerlister" has been added in the My Course menu. From here, a list can be fetched that includes study line.
External examiners access
Description:
External examiners should be able to access DTU Learn directly through Censornet.
Status:
It will be investigated in 2022 if this is possible. For now, DTUBase admins may create Guest Profiles, and then they can be added to the course in DTU Learn.
Group Enrollment Overview for 100+ students
Description:
When more than 50 students are assigned to groups, the "Enrollment" overview becomes unfeasible, and requires a lot of scrolling and clicking through pages.
Status:
This suggestion has been added to the PIE.

Allow students to add more groups themselves
Description:
When choosing Groups of # - Self Enrolment, the system only creates enough groups to accomodate all the students, using the maximum number of students in each group. The instructor then needs to add extra groups if the students need it. Allow students to make groups themselves.

Error when downloading files that begin with "."
Description:
If a student uploads a file called ".rdata", i.e. with no filename and only an extension, the system accepts it, but the instructor cannot download it.
Status:
This suggestion has been added to the PIE. The issue was partly fixed in the August 2021 update, as teachers can now set a file extension filter.

Bulk edit closes after deleting
Description:
When in Content, users may want to delete several topics quickly. The expected behaviour is to use Bulk Edit, and then clicking the Trash Can icon next to each. However, after deleting a topic, Bulk Edit is disabled. Moreover, Bulk Edit is not available in the New Content Experience (NCE).
Status:
It has been deemed unlikely that Brightspace will improve the old content experience. Bulk edit has been suggested added in the New Content Experience.

Correct answer in Self Assessment
Description:
Currently, it is not possible to choose a correct question for self assessments, since the students cannot submit their answers, and thus not get the correct answers. It would be nice if it was made possible to select a correct answer that is given to the student either immediately after clicking, or after clicking a new button called "check my answer".
Status:
Several ideas have been posted to the PIE, but the answer to them all is the same: No improvements to the Self Assessments currently planned.

Homepage Widget Expansion Pack
Description:
A teacher requests the Photo Banner Widget which is part of the Widget Expansion Pack.
Status:
It has for now been deemed too expensive to buy.
Default Calendar View, Week start on Monday
Description:
As weeks begin on Monday in Denmark, it would be nice if the default setting for weeks and the default setting for clocks is to begin on Monday and be 24-hours.
Status:
It is not possible to change the default settings for this currently, but we will get in contact with the D2L support, to hear if they can change it for us.
Long course names cannot be displayed on the homepage
Description:
When users are on the content page of a course with a considerable long title, it is not displayed fully, and vital information such as the semester cannot be seen.
Status:
It is possible to manually change the course title through the Course Offering Information found in Course Admin. We are open to other solutions to this problem.
There are no Jun 2021, Jul 2021, Aug 2021 tabs on the Frontpage
Description:
Courses are currently grouped in tabs according to semester on the frontpage of DTU Learn. There are currently tabs for Fall and Spring semesters, but also one for January courses. DTU currently has six course periods; January, Spring, June, July, August, and Fall. There should be tabs for each of them.
Status:
The issue is complicated as three 3-week periods exists in the Spring semester, and only one in the Fall semester. We will look into it i 2022.
Select all rows only selects the currently viewed
Description:
When viewing various lists on DTU Learn, you often have the possibility to "Select all rows". However, this only selects the currently viewed rows, which for the classlist is a default of 20. It should be changed so that "Select all rows" actually selects all.

Links created while editing does not work
Description:
When inserting links in an announcement, they do not work before the announcement is published, which means that the teacher cannot test them.

Default to view 1000 or all
Description:
Lists of groups, students, submissions etc. Default to view 20 or so. It should be a much higher number.
Status:
When changing the number of items per page, the system remembers this for the user, so a default setting is not neccessary. The option to view all has been suggested on the PIE.

Quizzes require too many clicks
Description:
Creating a quick quiz requires a lot of clicks. I would be nice if there was a way to quickly create a new quiz, for use live in class or similar use cases.
Status:
A new updated quiz creation experienced is announced for 2022. In the meantime, we advice teachers with this use case to use other systems, such as sendsteps.com, Socratic, quizizz, Quizlet or Kahoot.
Translation Key between Assignment Files and Users in the Groups
Description:
When downloading all submissions from Group assignments, it is difficult to see what assignments belong to which students. Only the uploader is identified in the folder structure. A solution would be to include a translation key with all groups, names and usernames, like what you can export from the grading tool.

This idea has been posted to the PIE.

Courses that span over two semesters are created in two versions
Description:
Courses like Physics 1, that span over two semesters are created twice, in Spring and Fall versions. Teachers continue to use the first version, and the second version is just an empty shell.
Status:
This is possibly not a problem, since students are not affected by this, but teachers might be confused about the two versions.
Update files in Manage files should automatically update the file in content
Description:
When overwriting a file in Manage Files, the link in Content is broken.
Status:
This is no longer an issue. Users may however need to close their browser and open it again to see the new file.
Bulk edit things like file type for assignments
Description:
Not yet handled.
Status:
Not yet handled.
Show students "Enroll in course" when trying to access a Discover course
Description:
When students receive a link to a course that they have not signed up for, they get a "not autorised" message. It would be better if they received a link to the enroll page, if the course is available for enrollment.

Date format setting does not change the displayed format
Description:
Account Settings can change the format to yyyy-MM-dd, but the dates shown in the interface is still, e.g., "05 August" (as the "Due" date).

Toggling "View as student" should make you stay on the same page
Description:
Currently, whenever you press "View as student", the system takes you to the homepage of the course. In all cases, when you press the button, it is because you want to see the current page as a student would see it. The same applies when you toggle it off. You should stay on the same page.

Long response times during rush hours
Description:
Users are experiencing long response times on DTU Learn, especially just after 8:00 Monday to Thursday.
Status:
This issue was only documented in August 2021, and not since. If you experience long loading times, please write the support.
Students cannot see if they submitted an assignment through calendar
Description:
If an assignment has a due date, it turns up in the students' calendars. If the student clicks the event, no information on previous submissions is included, and clicking the assignment takes the user directly to the submission page which does not show previous submissions either.

Allow teachers to set a limit on file size for assignment submissions
Description:
We would like to request for an option in the dropbox folder to set a file size limit to the file submission. This is to prevent students from submitting huge files which could pose download issue for the instructors.

Show members of groups when displaying unsubmitted groups
Description:
When you wish to have a quick overview of the students that did not hand in a group assignment, you need to correlate the list of groups and their members with the list of groups that did not submit. It would be better if the Assignment Overview also displayed the members of each group when using e.g. "Submissions: Unsibmitted groups". Currently, it only gives you a list of the group names, i.e. Group1, Group2 etc. as seen on the attached picture. The teacher then needs to crosscheck this with a list of all groups and their group members to see which students did not hand in.

Overwriting files using Manage Files does not work
Description:
When overwriting a file in Manage Files, the link in content still points to the old file. Adding the file again from Manage Files also points to the old file.
Status:
This is due to the file being saved in the browsers cache. Closing all browser windows fixes it.
Middle click or "Open in new tab" does not work
Description:
In various places around the platform, using the middle click or right click plus "Open in new tab" does not work. Examples: Middle clicking module titles in the Content area, middle clicking links to external pages in the navbar.

Urkund does not accept certain file types
Description:
Users can submit various file types to DTU Learn fine, but Urkund rejects all other file types than .doc, .docx, .xls, .xlsx, .sxw, .ppt, .pptx, .pdf, .pdf 2.0, .txt, .rtf, .html, .htm, .wps, .odt, .odp, .ods, .tif, .tiff, .ps, .hwp, .pages, and .zip.
Status:
Since Urkund was overtaken by TurnItIn, it is no longer being developed by the provider. We are looking into other plagiarism systems and how they integrate with Learn.
Copying Intelligent Agents does not include dates or release conditions
Description:
When copying IAs using the Import/Export/Copy function, dates and release conditions are not included.
Status:
Release Conditions may be included by selecting them as well when choosing what to copy from the previous course. With regards to the scheduling dates, there are several PIE-items related to this, please upvote those.
Drag-and-drop opens document instead of uploading
Description:
When drag-and-dropping a file into content or an Upload-box, the file is opened instead of being uploaded.
Status:
This issue is due to the file being release in the wrong area of the webpage. The file should be released in an area that highlights when hovering over it. It has been suggested to use the disallowed drop cursor and do nothing when releasing in a wrong place. See PIE-link.
